Job Description

Salary range £35000 to £40000 pa dependent on experience

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

Do you want to help develop the next generation of scientists? Can you engage with scientists and their teams to develop and source learning solutions to meet their needs? The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute has an opportunity for an experienced L&D Manager to make a real difference to the shape and delivery of its varied and wide-ranging learning curriculum.

The Institute has recently developed a new learning strategy that will provide a clear line of sight from its strategic aims to specific learning activities. It also emphasises the way in which learning will help integrate performance development, career management, succession planning and personal growth. We are now looking for a creative individual to implement this strategy.

This challenging new role, reporting to an HR Partner, will deliver on a number of key initiatives (see role profile) that will involve the coordination of multi-functional teams from across the Institute. This is a great opportunity to broaden your skills and to make a real difference to the way in which the needs of our scientific teams are met.

The purpose of the role is to translate the strategy into real, tangible learning activities. This will mean working with internal and external subject matter experts, negotiating with third-party providers and ensuring that the learning curriculum is kept fresh, vital and attuned to organisational needs and priorities. There is a real opportunity to make a difference here. We're not looking for a trainer, although some delivery may be necessary, you will develop solutions to address broader training and development needs. We need someone who can build a value-adding learning function and manage the conflicting needs and requirements of a leading-edge scientific organisation.

Essential Skills You will possess a track record of implementing learning and development at all levels within a complex organisation. You will be an effective communicator and influencer with the ability to understand the issues being described and to identify learning, or other, solutions that could help to resolve them. You will need to be experienced in the application of technology to learning and in the use of both blended and experiential learning approaches. Experience of negotiating with and managing external providers is a pre-requisite and you should be aware of funding sources in the sector.

Ideal Skills Direct experience of academic and scientific organisations would be a distinct advantage, either as a scientist who has diversified into L&D or as a specialist who has held a learning role in a scientific organisation.

Other information The Sanger Institute is a scientific research institute primarily funded by the Wellcome Trust. We use a range of technologies and approaches to further understanding of gene function in health and disease. Employing over 800 employees on one site in Hinxton, south Cambridgeshire, we are a knowledge-based organisation which offers a stimulating work environment as the context for our cutting edge research.

Benefits Salary range £35000 to £40000 pa dependent on experience.

The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
