• What’s involved:

a. To process all claims for Housing and Council Tax Benefit, including complex cases in accordance with relevant primary and secondary legislation, any amendments, Verification Framework, guidance, case law and best practice.

b. To have and maintain a detailed working knowledge of Housing and Council Tax Benefit legislation law and practice and related welfare benefits. In addition to maintain a working knowledge of other related legislation to deal with claims involving earnings, assessment of capital values, properties and asset.

c. To process all benefit claims correctly and therefore reduce the risk of official error (local authority error) overpayments and the opportunity to maximise income from Housing Benefit Subsidy

d. To make appointments with customers to resolve their benefit claims speedily, either by telephone or in writing; ensuring that they are made aware of any evidence requirements prior to the appointment.

e. To interview and advise the customers on all issues relating to Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and entitlement to other welfare benefits. To do so in line with Data Protection Act, Confidentiality Rules, Government Regulations and Council Policies and anti fraud initiatives.

f. To visit customers at home to obtain necessary information and evidence and assist them with claiming benefit. To also carry out Intervention and HBMS visits as required to meet targets and guidelines.

g. To deal with telephone enquiries both internal and external, in a polite and professional manner, remaining customer orientated and all times and ensure that an appropriate response is given within set guidelines and targets.

h. Be alert potential fraudulent claims and take action in accordance with service guidelines.

i. To make investigations on liability where information is not clear or is potentially fraudulent and to refer cases to the Corporate Anti Fraud Team for investigation where potentially fraudulent claims fir Housing Benefit or other may have been identified

j. To correctly determine overpayments to attract the correct subsidy and make decisions about their recoverability and who to recover from. Where necessary prepare reports for write offs.
